Chapter 14 ~ Reluctant Suitor

“Why should I marry you? Give me one good reason,” Lady Harriette beseeched her, hitherto, reluctant suitor.

Richard was flabbergasted. Has she not pressed me for days to state my intentions, on bent knees, no less?

Richard had scarcely slept a wink the past evening. He knew there was no point in putting the inevitable off any longer. Besides, he wanted to do so before everybody left Matlock in return to their own homes. To his way of thinking, there could be no doubt of the outcome. Still, he was quite nervous. There he was, his moment of truth, poised to take the biggest step of the rest of his life. She stood there with her arms folded. Her lovely face bore the sternest expression he had yet to behold. She seemed not at all inclined to make it easy for him.

He raised himself to a standing position. “A reason?”

“Yes,” she insisted. “I would bring fifty thousand pounds to the alliance. What precisely are you offering?”

“Why—why my undying love for you!”

“You love me?”

“Yes, I do, Harriette. I am very much in love with you. Indeed, my greatest wish is that you might one day return my love.”

“Oh, Fitzwilliam,” she started. He gently touched his finger upon her lips to hush her. She was rendered silently attentive by the exquisite feelings thus provoked.

“Stop that.”

“Richard, I do apologise for teasing you so.” She brushed a light kiss upon his cheek. “If you must know, I absolutely adore you.”
